Finder

Finder's new look. On the left appears the Sidebar, a short access to places you view the most

on you Mac. This bar is fully customizable (look down this page), and can show external

Firewire disks, CD and other media, along with an eject button for those removable items.

Click the Hide Toolbar button on the right of Finders window and it'll suddenly revert to its "Classic" look.

Shown are Applications and Utilities that come with Mac OS X 10.3.

Modify the Sidebar from Finder Preferences.

You can also add and remove elements by dragging them in and out the Sidebar.

Notice that not every disk partition needs to appear on Sidebar ; once you remove a partition,

it won't show again unless you add it back, which helps keeping this area clear.

Network icon is used to browse servers on the network. Just choose a computer you want to connect to

and the enter you login information. No need to do " Connect to server... " from Go menu in Panther.

Finder toolbar still holds a search field to easily find files from the Finder, but this option is now much more powerful !

You can first specify the scope of your search from the loupe icon. Then type a few letters, and results will appear

instantly (as below). Notice the new " Parent " column, which helps retrace the identity and location of a file.

( read description above )

Labels are back in Panther ! If you used them in Mac OS 9, you'll be happy to have them back.

Notice that only the name of the file appears colored, and that a small spot remain on the right

to show you the label of a selected item. Labels are customizable (their text at least) in Finder Preferences.

Labels as they appear in icon view. Notice the new action menu that offers options about the current folder.

Select a file, and you have options about this file, along with the ability to modify its label.

Another new feature, Create Archive of... will create a compressed (Zipped) file of the selected item.

One new feature that will help make Mac OS X even more secure is the option to Secure Empty Trash.

Worried that someone might find personnal information in files you deleted ? Use this option and your files

will be forever removed from your hard drive.
